A booklet for Plato’s Euthyphro and Apology

14th October 2026

The fourteenth Phil@Viv philosophy meeting, on October 14, read Plato’s Euthyphro and Apology in G. M. A. Grube’s translation: Socrates on the way to court, cross-examining a man who is sure he knows what piety is, and then Socrates on trial for his life. The host shared the reading as a PDF on Google Drive, 37 letter-size book pages. I turned it into a pocket booklet, the first of what became a run of these.

The booklet

It is printed on precut 6.125 x 9.25 inch stock, the size of a Supreme Court brief. The cover has a double-rule frame, Greek-key bands at the top and bottom, PLATO with ΠΛΑΤΩΝ above it, the two titles with their Greek names, and the line from Apology 38a in Greek and in Grube’s English: “The unexamined life is not worth living for men.”

The booklet's cover: Greek-key bands, PLATO with its Greek form above, Euthyphro and Apology in italic, and the Apology 38a line in Greek and English

The interior is the host’s pages, each cropped to its text block and enlarged. Left and right pages of a book sit at different offsets on the page, so odd and even pages each get their own crop box. The first print had margins of about a third of an inch. I widened them by a quarter inch for the reprints, to 0.65 inch at the sides and 0.75 inch at the top and bottom, which leaves room to write. The Stephanus numbers in the margin stay in, so “38a” can be found on the page.

Booklet page 3: the opening exchange between Socrates and Euthyphro, with Stephanus margin letters

Booklet page 33: Socrates proposing his penalty in the Apology, including "the unexamined life is not worth living for men" at 38a

The booklet reproduces the whole translation, so I am not posting the print files.

A glossary

Download the glossary (PDF). It is written for the booklet and covers the people, the places and institutions of an Athenian trial, the gods and myths Euthyphro cites, and the ideas and arguments, each with Stephanus references. A short guide at the top maps the main movements of each dialogue to the entries that matter there.

Paper and printing

The cover went one-sided on an Epson EcoTank ET-2988 on Cougar White Card Stock, 65 lb / 176 gsm, Smooth, and the interior duplex on 60 lb text paper, such as Cougar White Digital Super Smooth, 60 lb / 89 gsm, both from CutCardStock with custom cutting to 6⅛ × 9¼. The cover’s blank back faces page 1, so the booklet opens straight onto the Euthyphro.
